Research

Thanks to research, cancer patients are surviving longer, with better quality of life, and a number of cancers are now curable if detected early.

Important as these advances are, there is a great deal of work yet to be done to relieve the enormous burden of cancer on society. There are more than 300 different types of cancer, each with its own mysteries to solve and challenges to address. Meanwhile, the latest Canadian cancer statistics predict that 40 per cent of Canadian women and 45 per cent of Canadian men will develop cancer in their lifetimes, and one out of every four Canadians will die from the disease.

The Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, well-coordinated cancer research effort in Atlantic Canada. By bringing researchers from many disciplines and institutions together, the institute is creating powerful team efforts that will reveal causes and means of preventing cancer, as well as more effective ways of detecting, diagnosing and treating cancer.

Research – and putting the results of research into action through good health policy and best practices – is the only way to save lives and improve the lives of people with cancer.
